Amino Acids are the building blocks that make up proteinsThey contain about 16% nitrogenProteins are chains of amino acids linked together by peptide bondsEach individual type of protein is composed of a specific group of amino acids in a specific chemical arrangementIt is the particular amino acids present and the way they are linked in sequence that gives the proteins the unique functions and characters for a specific need.
Amino acids also allow vitamins and minerals to perform their jobs correctly
There are approximately 28 commonly know amino acids that are combined in various ways to create hundreds of proteins in a living organismIn the human body the liver produces about 80% of the amino acids needed (the ‘non-essential amino acids’)The remaining 20% must be obtained from the dietThese are called the ‘essential amino acids’.
