PMS
Premenstrual syndrome (PMS) can be connected to a lack of certain vitamins, minerals and fatty acids, or the fluctuation of the hormones that regulate menstruation. Women who suffer from premenstrual syndrome can notice symptoms up to three weeks before their menstrual period, although they are most common during the few days prior to the beginning of a period. The symptoms - such as bloating, headaches, irritability, food cravings, fatigue, depression and backache – generally subside just as menstruation begins. However an estimated 30 percent to 40 percent of women have symptoms severe enough to impair their daily activities.

There are many conventional aids to alleviating some of the common symptoms, these include Progestins, which may act as progestational agents and effect serum concentrations of other hormones, particularly oestrogen; Analgesics, which may aid in pain relief associated with PMS; Antidysmenorrheals, which may inhibit hormones responsible for pain and other PMS symptoms; and Diuretics, which may help reduce water retention during PMS.

Selective serotonin reuptake inhibitors (SSRIs) are increasingly being used as first-line therapy for severe PMS. Generally used to treat illnesses such as depression and anxiety, SSRIs have fewer side effects than other antidepressants.

Many natural treatments to alleviate symptoms are also commonly recommendedHerbs such as Angelica and Rosemary may aid in alleviating menstrual cramps; Black cohosh, Chamomile, or Valerian may have sedative properties and help with mood swings; Feverfew may aid in relieving headaches and PMS symptoms; and Licorice contains chemicals similar to oestrogen and progesterone and may aid in decreasing PMS symptoms..

Most importantly, vitamins, supplements, minerals and dietary modifications are all vital aids to prevention as well as to alleviating and combating PMSPlease ask your NHA for further information.
