Menopause
Women now realise the importance of diet, lifestyle, supplementation and alternative medicine to a woman's overall health, replacing or enhancing the effectiveness of conventional medical treatment during menopause and into the later years.

A woman wants to achieve optimum health during these years, with minimum upheaval or discomfortHow a woman chooses to do this is within her control.

Conventional medicine tries to correct the imbalances that develop within a woman's hormonal system during and after menopause and alternative medical focuses on strengthening the female body by encouraging it to balance, regulate, and normalize itself during the transition to menopause.

Specific nutritional changes and herbal supplements have been shown to alleviate the discomforts of menopause, including hot flashes, night sweats, heart palpitations, and vaginal dryness, as well as to significantly reduce the risk of osteoporosis and heart disease. Natural therapies also dramatically reduce, if not eliminate side effects and the risks of prescription hormone replacement.

Alternative treatments have also been shown to enhance the effects of HRT by reducing dosage requirements, thus alleviating the health risks associated with HRT

Because they deal with the whole body system and not just the symptoms, alternative medicines tend to work slower, so it may take a few weeks to see any effects and so it is important to stay with the therapy.

Examples of herbs typically used to treat menstrual irregularity, hot flashes and vaginal discomfort include:

Blue cohosh (Caulophyllum thalictroides).
Chaste tree (Vitex agnus-castus).
Damask rose (Rosa damascene).
Golden seal (Hydrastis canadenis).
Ladies mantle Wchemilla vulgaris).
Motherwort (Leonurus cardiaca).
Sage (Salvia officinalis).
Vervain (Verbena officinalis).

In traditional Chinese medicine too, numerous herbal formulas reportedly can alleviate hot flashes and other menopausal symptoms such as fatigue, headache, and menstrual irregularities.
