Orthomolecular Medicine – General Information
Orthomolecular medicine concentrates on correcting the molecular structure of the body by supplying it with sufficient amounts of the nutrients it needs, such as vitamins, minerals and amino acidsIt does so within a proper balanced and favourable environment

The principles behind orthomolecular medicine originated in the 1920s when vitamins and minerals were first used to treat illnessesScientific evidence began to surface over many years, then in the 1950s Abram Hoffer MD and Humphrey Osmond MD began successfully treating schizophrenia with specific doses of vitamin B3 (niacin).

Orthomolecular medicine evolved over time under the direction of Linus Pauling PhD (winner of two Nobel prizes) in 1968It is designed to enable individuals to achieve optimum health and peak performance by utilising only naturally occurring substances (e.g. vitamins, minerals, enzymes, trace elements and co-enzymes)The proper balance of these substances in the body is the key to reaching physical, mental and emotional health and stabilityOrthomolecular medicine can be used therapeutically to treat diseases, or preventatively to impede the progress of degenerative disease and aging.

Some people tend to confuse orthomolecular medicine with nutritional and/or diet therapy, since all three therapies promote the use of vitamin, enzyme and mineral supplementsThe primary difference between the three is that in orthmolecular medicine the specific nutritional balance is fundamental in obtaining and maintaining optimum health.
